How to talk about the environment? Heroes/heralds and environmental communication

A conference organised on 9, 10 and 11 December 2020, at a distance.

Does the Earth need heroes and heralds to save and protect it?
From exhibitions with evocative titles to the "small steps" of Nicolas Hulot who resigned as a minister in the French government on 28 August 2018, on a French national radio station, France Inter, we are constantly being confronted with to this crucial issue: how to communicate on the environmental crisis? This conference proposes
to analyse the communication mechanisms and the facets of this desire for mobilisation carried by the heralds,
communication professionals and environmental heroes (Schneiter, 2018), ordinary heroes or environmental activists of a silent war.

Anthropocene, Zadists, caretakers, anti-speciesists, eco-feminists, transhumanists, collapsologists...
Our era is traversed by movements that aim at different types of change, sometimes contradictory. The pre-Covid-19 period saw a rise in ecological concerns in our relatively strong everyday prism, between climate change and municipal elections' profession of faith. This involved in particular of the so-called "Z" generation. "Reinventing Humanity" was the title of Le monde diplomatique in April 2020 (Pieiller, p. 12).
But in this open public space, with multiple arenas that sometimes carry environmental discourse different, who emerges? Who represents? Who embodies? What do we know about the popular apprehension of flag bearers?
What chance do these teenagers of today have to carry the messages? Should we seek familiarisation,
popularity, or scientific complexity? How to analyse the ethos (old category, back on the agenda by new rhetoric and research in discourse analysis, e.g. Maingueneau, Giaufret etc. ) of characters who embody and carry the word of the movements for (and against) the protection of the environment?

So how can we talk about the environment? "Do we really need new heroes/heralds? "The question
that we pose opens up a wide field of reflection, both on content and semiotic constitution
of environmental communication than on a more pragmatic field of persuasion, reception
and the circulation of messages.
